Brief history of FARO

The idea of establishing a forum for Arctic logistics and research planning has been considered for some time. In August 1998, an initial meeting attended by 24 operators from 11 countries was held. They agreed to initiate the forum, appointed a small group to draft terms of reference, and had an initial discussion about tasks.

The second meeting, held during the Arctic Science Summit Week in April 1999, was also well attended by operators. They started discussions on the terms of reference, membership and tasks - and some useful clarifications were made.

Since then, FARO has gradually developed. The annual meetings are held during the Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW).
