The document below describes FARO from its initial idea (as presented in 1998 by Bonni Hrycyk from Canada), through its inception and early meetings, all the way through to its twentieth year anniversary in 2018. The document is meant to tell the story of FARO and the evolution of its activities and objectives. It is not meant to be exhaustive – for more detailed meeting minutes, country presentations, or full lists of meeting attendees, see the meeting archives under the “annual meetings”. This history document was kindly compiled by Piotr Glowacki of Poland and James Drummond of Canada.

In 2018, FARO could celebrate its 20 years anniversary. A short movie was made, presenting the 'past, present and future' of arctic research infrastructures operated by FARO member countries. The pictures and information are kindly provided by FARO member countries, and the movie is made by the FARO secretariate.
