International Polar Year (IPY)

The Fifth International Polar Year (IPY-5) will take place in 2032-2033, bringing together researchers, Indigenous knowledge holders, policymakers, and infrastructure providers in a coordinated global effort to advance understanding of the Arctic and Antarctic during a period of unprecedented environmental change. Building on more than 150 years of international polar collaboration, IPY-5 will support research, observations, innovation, education, and international cooperation across the polar regions.

FARO will actively follow and support the development of IPY-5 by sharing relevant information, opportunities for collaboration, infrastructure planning activities, and access to Arctic research facilities. This page will provide links to key IPY resources, polar infrastructure maps, observing networks, and planning initiatives to help the community prepare for and contribute to IPY-5.

Norway will host the Fifth International Polar Year Coordination Office, in Partnership with the Republic of Korea and Chile.
